Uncovering the Techniques of Paraphrasing Written Outputs of Students: A Content Analysis

This study analyzed the paraphrasing techniques used in the paraphrasing written outputs of the students and how they were presented in view with the existing conventions or standards in paraphrasing. This study used fifty plus one (50+1) corpora which were purposively selected based on the selection criteria. The corpora gathered underwent content analysis which was used in identifying the techniques found in the paraphrasing written outputs of the learners. The results revealed that there were four major techniques used by the students in their paraphrasing written outputs namely: (1) use of synonym, (2) change in word class, (3) change in word order, and (4) change in sentence structure. Moreover, in accordance to how these techniques were presented based on the existing paraphrasing standards, it was evident that the students have inappropriately used the techniques as reflected in their written outputs and that it can be concluded that learners have low level of mastery as to paraphrasing skill. Findings suggest that further research in a wider scope should be made to validate the findings of this study. Moreover, there is a need to improve the students’ knowledge and skills pertaining paraphrasing techniques and standards. With this, the findings of the study contributed pedagogical implications for academic writing courses for senior high school.
